Orishas and Their Tools
Learn about the traditional tools and toolsets used by the Orishas, the spirits in the Yoruba religion, in their rituals and offerings.
The 5” Elegua Head is a sacred object traditionally used in Santería, Lukumí, and other Yoruba-derived practices to represent the Orisha Elegua. As the gatekeeper of all spiritual paths and protector of homes, Elegua is honored at the entrance of one’s space to ensure open roads, divine messages, and protection from misfortune. Made from cement or clay and often embedded with cowrie shells, this head serves as a physical vessel for prayers, offerings, and spiritual connection. It is placed in doorways, altars, or ritual spaces to welcome Elegua’s powerful presence and to maintain balance between the seen and unseen worlds.
